I've always found that the best way for me to prepare for a role is to live it. I've never had much of an interest in allowing CGI to take the wheel, so I've always made it a mission of mine to be as physically ready to embody a character as possible. From losing sixty-five pounds for The Machinist, and gaining forty for American Hustle, I've done some pretty cruel things to my body. But why wouldn't you want to embody a character? Why wouldn't you want to immerse yourself in what their world is like? I've never understood how people can work otherwise.

Fincher and I, we have this well-established understanding of each other. We know how the other one works, and that's why we collaborate so frequently. He understands that I need space and time to give the best that I can. I understand that he's a moody old bastard who is never satisfied. [laughs] Really, though, I'm very lucky to have found someone that makes collaboration so easy. That, and he doesn't give me too much trouble when I show up late. In fact, I think he's started giving me the wrong call time so I show up when I'm actually needed.
